Together with a guide, you will visit the archaeological site of the Abbey of the Dunes as well as its museum.
In order to imagine what life was like in the Middle Ages, we have to reflect on the spirit of the times. What crafts were there, for example, and what was the role of women, of children? What were the most common causes of death? Faith played a very big role, which we learn from the crusades, but also from the belief in the afterlife.
You will discover how the mighty Cistercian abbey rose from the ground and how prayer and work – ora et labora – were the common thread in a monk’s life. The various tasks within the abbey are also discussed. We will also take a peek into the Dune Lords’ cooking pots and jars, and we will see that now and then, there was also room for relaxation! One of the most famous abbots was Idesbald. A great devotion arose around his figure, which your guide will tell you all about.
The very diverse pieces from the collection bring us very close to the life of the monks, including many intriguing archaeological finds. The short film ‘Ten Duinen’ by Stijn Coninx also helps us to put ourselves in the monk’s shoes, as does the impressive map of the abbey painted by Pieter Pourbus in the 16th century. It is only while walking outside between the remnants of ancient walls, discovering the different rooms, that you truly make the connection with the painting.
This guided tour is truly a classic in our offer! It can be booked in Dutch, French or English.
